RAK ON: Embracing the Spirit of Pura Vida

This past week, I had the incredible opportunity to visit Costa Rica with my family, where I encountered a phrase that seemed to permeate every interaction and experience: "Pura Vida." Anyone who has spent time in Costa Rica has undoubtedly heard this phrase.
Initially, I noticed it being used similarly to how "Aloha" is used in Hawaii – a greeting, a farewell, an expression of joy. But as the days went by, I realized "Pura Vida" is more than a phrase. It’s a way of life, an ethos of pure, uncluttered living, radiating positive vibes and genuine appreciation for a joyful life.
"Pura Vida" literally translates to "Pure Life,” and its essence embodies the Costa Rican way of life: a simple, relaxed, and grateful approach to each moment. In my conversations with locals, I learned it can be regarded as a spiritual practice. "Pura Vida" encourages mindfulness and presence, fostering a deeper connection to ourselves and the world around us, promoting spiritual growth and inner peace.
This philosophy encourages living in harmony with nature, fostering deep connections with family and friends, and maintaining a positive outlook even in the face of challenges.
During our stay, we felt the spirit of "Pura Vida" everywhere. The unhurried pace of vacation allowed me to slow down and appreciate the beauty around me—from the lush rainforests to the serene beaches.
But how does one apply this philosophy when not on a relaxing vacation? Upon returning home, we took a red eye and got very little sleep. Upon landing in the US, we discovered our connecting flight had been canceled. In that moment, I had a choice. I could get upset and spew out negative energy, or I could channel "Pura Vida" and the positivity it represents.
I'm writing this on the second leg of a journey that has us taking a detour to the Pacific Northwest on our way home to California. Instead of succumbing to frustration, my whole family has focused on staying calm and appreciating the unexpected detour.
So, let's RAK Our Week by embracing the spirit of "Pura Vida." In the hustle and bustle of our daily lives, it's easy to lose sight of the simple joys that make life truly rich. By embracing "Pura Vida," we can simplify our lives, appreciate the beauty around us, and spread positive energy wherever we go.

Take a moment each day to share something you are grateful for with your family or friends. This could be done around the dinner table or during a quiet moment together. Encourage them to do the same, fostering a collective sense of appreciation and positivity.
